Carbohydrates : The Good, the Bad and the Forbidden

Carbohydrates have been seen as evil by the nutrition world (especially because of fad diets like Atkins or the Zone), but are slowly regaining their rightful reputation as food that provides the body with fuel for physical activity, proper organ function, and are an important part of a healthy diet.

Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for our body and come from plant based food sources. They can be grouped into two categories (see table below). Complex carbohydrates are obviously “better” for you, but at the end of the day they all break down into simple sugars so should be eaten in moderation (remember balance is key).

For further information, click here to check out what the smart folks at Harvard School of Public Health are saying about carbohydrates.

Something else to consider is glycemic index (GI). This is how the food you eat affects your blood sugar level, and thus your insulin levels. For instance a Coke will send your glucose level through the roof instantly, while a bowl of brown rice will be a slow and steady stream of energy. Choosing low GI foods is the secret to long-term health reducing your risk of heart disease and diabetes and is the key to sustainable weight loss. Macronutrients

Macronutrients comprise just about everything we eat (hence the name). They include carbohydrates, proteins, and fats which primarily provide the body with energy (aka calories) for growth, metabolism and other bodily functions. Check out the table below for a macronutrient snapshot.
