Finding YOUR Balance in Nutrition

One of the hallmarks of alternative medical philosophy is the recognition of the biochemical uniqueness of each individual – thus the need for a personally tailored “treatment” which may include a myriad of modalities (acupuncture, naturopathy, massage, energy work, yoga, etc.), but the ONE constant is what we put in our bodies, aka nutrition. So what is good for you?? What diet fits your body’s particular needs?? Only you can answer this question for only you know how you feel when you ingest certain foods or follow a specific nutrition regimen. We recommend exploring different ways of eating (remember it can takes time for your body to attune so give it a couple months for viable results). Take note of your energy level, clarity of mind, moods, digestion and overall sense of well-being in a journal. Below are just a couple systems that might work for you! Check them out and see where you land….

Ayurvedic Diet

Ayurveda is an intricate system of healing that originated in India thousands of years ago and is made up of two Sanskrit words: Ayu which means life (the combination of mind, body, senses and soul) and Veda which means the knowledge of. To know about life is Ayurveda.

This system of medicine is based on the Prakriti, or the unique characteristic of individuals, which is determined by the combination of the three Doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha.  Your dosha is determined by what elements (ether, air, fire, water, earth) combine to create your personal physiological functions and traits. Once your dosha has been determined, there are specific foods that will support, balance and bolster your vitality, and many others (herbs included) that eliminate health issues of all sorts.

Blood Type Diet

Peter J. D'Adamo, N.D., in is the author of Eat Right 4 Your Type, a nutrition system based on the blood types: O, A, B, and AB. His research into anthropology, medical history, and genetics led him to conclude that blood type is "the key that unlocks the door to the mysteries of health, disease, longevity, physical vitality, and emotional strength." From this he has created detailed parameters for diet and exercise for each “type” of person. See below for a snapshot of each:

Type O - People with type O blood fare best on intense physical exercise and animal proteins and less well on dairy products and grains. The leading reason for weight gain among Type O's is the gluten found in wheat products and, to a lesser extent, lentils, corn, kidney beans, and cabbage. Ideal exercises for Type O's include aerobics, martial arts, contact sports, and running. 

Type A - Those with blood type A, however, are more naturally suited to a vegetarian diet and foods that are fresh, pure, and organic. As Type A's are predisposed to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, "I can't emphasize how critical this dietary adjustment can be to the sensitive immune system of Type A," says Dr. D'Adamo. Type A's prefer calming, centering exercise, such as yoga and tai chi. 

Type B - Type B's have a strong immune system and a tolerant digestive system and tend to resist many of the severe chronic degenerative illnesses, or at least survive them better than the other blood types. Type B's do best with moderate physical exercise requiring mental balance, such as hiking, cycling, tennis, and swimming. 

Type AB - Blood type AB, the most recent, in terms of evolution, of the four groups and an amalgam of types A and B, is the most biologically complex. For this group, a combination of the exercises for types A and B works best.

Vegetarian/Vegan Diet

What may appear as a hangover from the crunchy folks of the 70’s is actually an ancient lifestyle that Plato, Socrates, Alexander Pope and Sir Richard Phillups practiced for religious, economical or ethical reasons. Vegetarianism is very much alive today and has been a source for millions of people’s well-being across the globe. So why do they swear by this “rabbit food” diet??

  • Warding off Health Issues - preventing, treating or reversing heart disease and reducing the risk of cancer
  • Weight control - The standard American diet—high in saturated fats and processed foods and low in plant-based foods and complex carbohydrates is sky rocketing obesity rates and related health complications and illnesses

Gluten-Free/Dairy-Free Diets

Gluten and dairy are considerably irritating to the vast majority of the population, with soy and corn right behind them. Most individuals that choose this healthy, but challenging diet suffer from a persistent or chronic ailment that most other “treatments” or Western medicine prescriptions can’t shake a stick at.  The elimination of these foods can greatly improve digestion as well as a host of other maladies that include but are not limited to:
