There were a couple hundred practitioners that participated in one way or another and the mass feedback was that they loved it. Several people said it changed their lives, changed their perspective, shifted a long held belief or behavior, and made them a better version of themselves. Wow. That is no small feat, and a testament to the amazing power and teaching ability of Ana Forrest. We spoke with Lauren Turnage, Co-Owner of Root Yoga Center, Forrest Yoga Teacher, and new Mom about her experience as a host and participant in the intensives.

What is it like practicing with Ana Forrest?

There truly is nothing like having Ana as your yoga teacher for a month. She is incredibly skilled at holding the energy in the room and creating a warm, welcoming space. There may be 80 people in the class but it feels like she is touching you with her energy and talking right to you with her message at all times.

What were the intensive daily practices like??

I have practiced with Ana in various formats in the past (teacher trainings, workshops, etc) but this was different and special for me because I just had a baby (literally 2 months ago). After giving birth by body was rather void of sensation, felt flabby and loose and just not connected. In her classes I was able to connect to, and deeply feel my body in a whole new way. I could feel every little physical and emotional movement inside of myself like never before.

It was also really great how she structured the sequences of the classes and the postures in such an intentional way. The first couple classes were relatively easy but build upon each other, so that by the last week you had the strength to do the more difficult/challenging postures. AND by the end of the month my core and abs looked like I had never even had a child. Forrest abs pulled everything together, tight!

Where you able to get one-on-one attention from Ana?

Part of Ana’s gift is that she sees everything that is happening in the room. She connects with her eyes, her energy and her touch. If she knows your name she is calling you out to make adjustments from across the room. If not you would still receive at least one hands-on assist during the class from her or her assistants.

What kind of class size? Who were the people in the class?

There were about 30-40 practitioners in addition to the 40 teacher trainees in each of the intensive classes. Within the group were a wide range of folks – from those who have practiced with Ana for years to some who have only done a handful of Forrest classes.

What type of shift did you experience in your yoga practice or otherwise?

About halfway through the month I had this incredible settled and grounded feeling in my body that was like nothing I have ever felt before. There was a new desire to be in my body and make new mind/body connections. I felt able and willing let go of some of the stuff that got built up over my pregnancy, release emotions, and to be content with staying in this sacred place.

What was your biggest take away or from her visit?

Coming into it as a teacher I have a different perspective – I want to enhance my teaching. I was incredibly inspired by how Ana set the theme and carried it through the class. You can take (or teach) a class and just go through the movements, OR you can use the movements to learn something new and exciting about yourself. This happens by connecting to something inside yourself which is facilitated by the teacher. This is an art form I hope to perfect one day.

Root Yoga Center will be bringing Ana Forrest back to Denver in the coming months. For more information on local Ana Forrest events go to http://www.rootyogacenter.com/ana-forrest-denver-workshop/

New life is emerging from the darkness and cold of winter. At Root Yoga Center, we like to honor this seasonal transition with a group cleanse that will help our bodies rejuvenate and awaken after spending time indoors and eating hearty fare during the past few chilly months. We aren’t talking about a hard-core colon cleanse, the master cleanse or a fad detox diet. We are talking about a three week program with a uniquely effective approach to whole body detoxification. It truly has the power to change lives for the better and for the long-term when it comes to eating and feeling like a million bucks.

We could talk about how great it is all day long, but why not get a first-hand perspective from a few of the cleansers that went through the program last year.

Kelly

Why did you choose to do the Root Yoga Center cleanse? Did you have a specific goal in mind? Or symptom or ailment you wanted to address?

I chose this cleanse because it was ALL based on whole foods, which seemed more natural and holistic then doing a cleanse with powders and pills and what not. As for my health, I wanted to improve my digestion, eliminate acid reflux, reduce arthritis inflammation, and simply become a better cook.

Has it changed the way you eat over the long-term? If so how?

Absolutely – I don’t even want to eat food out of packages. My whole eating/cooking experience is so much more “tuned in”. I feel better on so many levels when I eat all whole foods. My digestion flows, my mental focus is enhanced, my energy skyrockets, and my pain is pretty much non-existent. Everything just feels better!

If you didn’t know how to cook? Could you still do the program??

Yes, the cook book guides you step by step with simple one-page recipes that are very straight forward. Before you know it you are cooking really amazing meals!

Would you recommend to friends? If so why?

I have recommended it to ALL my friends, literally. I have given the cookbook to friends for a birthday gift and many have actually done the program and totally shifted their eating habits.

What was your biggest take-away?

Finally making a connection about how I am eating and how that affects my overall health and feeling in my body. This is so much more than just a cleanse. It teaches you a truly sustainable long-term way of living, and brings about true healing.

Rachel

Why did you choose to do the cleanse at Root Yoga Center? Did you have a specific goal in mind? Or symptom or ailment you wanted to address?

I wanted to get my eating back in line and take a break from sugar and alcohol. I was enticed by the price point and cooking aspect.

How do you like the cookbook that goes with the cleanse? Do you still use it? How difficult are the recipes?

I simply LOVE the cookbook!! I use it all the time...the detox recipes overall are very easy -- even for an inexperienced cook. I also utilized the blog that went along with the cookbook -- great recipes there too! (http://www.nourishingmeals.com)

How has this program changed the way you think about food? Meal plan? Organize your kitchen, etc?

Since this cleanse I really started cooking in a different way. I use the cookbook I received all the time and now cook things and eat certain foods I didn't before. I'm definitely meal planning and because I stocked up on so many spices, and basic ingredients it is much easier to throw together a healthy meal.

What was your biggest take-away?

It opened my mind to a new way of cooking -- got me out of some pretty big ruts.

Jenna

How has this program changed the way you think about food? Meal plan? Organize your kitchen, etc?

Yes, definitely...when you stop eating many things like gluten, eggs, dairy etc...it forces you to explore other ways of eating...this cleanse helped me realize that there is a ton that I can eat. You also shop in the grocery store differently...mainly in the produce and the bulk section. In terms of kitchen organization - yes...most items purchased either go in the fridge or in mason jars in a cool dark place (my pantry shelf). It feels good to buy very few things that come in boxes or bags...

What did you think about the guidance from Dr. Caitlin? The weekly classes?

Dr. Caitlin provided a really nice space to discuss what came up for us during the cleanse - she also was able to answer many different types of questions. Classes were good and helped me keep on track.

Was it a big commitment overall??

Yes. Anytime you commit to a lifestyle change I do believe that it takes a pretty big commitment. Also - you spend a lot of time shopping for food, planning meals and making food for the week. This was time consuming but also a very important exercise for me. I became truly acquainted with slow food, and fell in love with it.

How did you feel comparatively before, during and after the cleanse?

Before - like crap, during ...you have to retrain your body regarding what "full" is - when you eat really clean - your body is satiated but your mind has cravings - dealing with your mind is much harder than dealing with your body sometimes. After I felt really great, and proud of myself that I was able to stay very true to the cleanse throughout the month.

Takeaway:

Like I mentioned before, gaining awareness of how my body can be totally satiated, but my mind still has cravings - being able to witness this dynamic without acting on it. Something I will keep in mind for the long-term.

These three ladies had a rather profound and long-lasting experience with the Root Rejuvenation Cleanse. It not only truly helped detoxify their bodies, but opened their mind to a new way of thinking about food and cooking. They have completely transformed their kitchens into healthy zones that arm them to make nutritious and fresh meals at a moment’s notice. And they all moved far away from packaged and processed foods and have not gone back. Kelly summed it up precisely, “Now I know exactly what is in my food because I am making everything from scratch. When you use packaged and processed foods you are letting the manufacturers control what you put in your body. Now that’s a scary thought!”

This program is much more than a cleanse, it is a life changing experience. But don’t believe the hype. Check it out for yourself.

Being a beginning yoga student can be scary and intimidating so we do our very best to make you feel at home in our community.

“I recall going to my first yoga class years ago…I was terrified.” states Lauren Turnage, Managing Partner and Forrest Yoga Teacher at Root Yoga Center in Denver. “I felt like everyone in the studio knew each other so I was a total outsider. I didn’t know what to expect. I knew I wasn’t flexible so didn’t want to embarrass myself. The negative inner dialogue went on and on. At Root we have done our very best to eliminate and barriers and the anxiety associated with trying yoga for the first time.”

Don’t be surprised if you get a warm welcome at Root as a new student. They typically introduce you to the teacher and at least a couple other participants in the class so you feel at home and immediately part of the community. Root also knows that steep prices can be a hurdle for trying something new. Their schedule now boasts at least two beginner classes each day Monday through Friday for just 10$. Now there really isn’t any excuse for not trying beginner yoga at Root Yoga Center in Denver.

The practice of yoga itself enhances the physical, mental and spiritual discipline of one's self and the meditative poses associated with yoga helps patients achieve a state of tranquility and spiritual insight. Widely accepted for its health benefits, doctors are seeing more and more benefit in prescribing yoga for cancer patients to enhance traditional cancer treatments in a very non-traditional way.

What Benefits Does Yoga Give Cancer Patients?

Many cancer patients and survivors suffer from sleep deprivation due to symptoms related to their cancers. Mesothelioma cancer and breast cancer patients most notably, have found that regular yoga exercises may help with breathing, relaxation and stressors. Likewise, yoga can provide a deep connection with one's self and while it may not be a cure for cancer it certainly provides a powerful healing practice for cancer patients and may increase life expectancy. Yoga helps patients regain the strength they need to help them stay strong to battle their respective cancer, and the grounding effects provided by the motions related to yoga helps them deal with their battle on a day-to-day basis.

The diagnosis of cancer such as mesothelioma prognosis is often followed by feelings of denial, doubt, self-loathing and fear. A yoga regime that focuses a patient's inner self with calm tranquility has been shown to help reduce the anxiety related to cancer and cancer treatment. The relaxation methods employed by regular use of yoga have shown to help when dealing with pain, invasive treatments and overall mental state. With a large part of any health battle being fought in one's mind, the meditation provided by the practice of yoga can help clear patient’s worries and let them focus more fully on their body and on the promotion of healing.

Over the years, yoga has proven to have many benefits that we are only just beginning to understand. For cancer patients, any relief offered during their time of trial and treatment is an added bonus as well as a welcome one. For families watching a loved one struggle with the cancer battle, simply knowing that their family member is provided some measure of relief through something as simple as yoga can have far reaching effects. Each patient in a scheduled group of yoga sessions can obtain benefits that go far beyond our understanding, but that help strengthen them for the fight of their lives.
